Bundle documents, logs, spreadsheets, code or any other files into a single compressed ZIP, ready to email or upload as one attachment. Text-based files (CSV, TXT, JSON, logs, code) usually shrink by 70–90%. Photos, videos and PDFs are already compressed, so ZIP will not make them much smaller; use the dedicated image, video and PDF compressors for those.

What is ZIP File Compressor?

This tool lets you compress files to ZIP in your browser: drop any mix of documents, spreadsheets, logs, code or images and download one compressed archive. It is the easiest way to turn a pile of attachments into a single file that is quicker to email, upload or store.

Text-based files such as CSV, TXT, JSON, logs and source code usually shrink by 70–90%. Photos, videos and PDFs are already compressed, so ZIP mainly bundles them together. You choose the compression level and the archive name, and your files never leave your device.

How to use the ZIP File Compressor

  1. Drop any files (mix types freely).
  2. Choose the compression level and a file name.
  3. Download the ZIP.

How ZIP File Compressor works

ZIP files normally use DEFLATE compression, which combines two ideas. First it finds repeated sequences, such as the same column name on every row of a CSV, and replaces later copies with a short pointer back to the first. Then it gives common symbols shorter codes and rare ones longer codes, so frequent letters take fewer bits.

Text and data are full of repetition, which is why they compress so well. JPEG photos, MP4 videos and most PDFs have already been compressed, so they look almost random and DEFLATE cannot find much to remove. For those, use a dedicated image, video or PDF compressor first.

Maximum level searches harder for repeats and gives the smallest archive; Normal is faster; Store only bundles files without compressing. The archive is built in your browser's memory, and each file keeps its original modified date.

Key features of ZIP File Compressor

Free ZIPs, no size cap

Create archives at no cost with your free daily runs, and without a fixed file size limit. The only practical limit is your device's memory, so multi-gigabyte archives may be slow on phones.

Standard DEFLATE archives

Archives use standard DEFLATE compression and open with the built-in tools in Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. Each file keeps its name and modified date, and duplicate names are numbered automatically.

Fast, all on your device

Files are compressed on your device as soon as you click Create ZIP. Large folders are never sent to a server, and the result line shows the total size before and after, with the percentage saved.

Any device, any file type

Drop files from a desktop, choose them from a phone's file picker or a tablet's Files app. It works in current Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on every major system.

Accessible archive settings

The level menu and name field are labelled and keyboard operable. Screen readers announce progress and the final archive size, and the page supports zoom, small screens and dark mode.

Files never leave your device

Everything is zipped inside your browser, so contracts, code and personal files are not sent to any server. You can check the network tab and see that nothing is sent.

What makes EZ Compress's ZIP File Compressor different

1

Honest about what shrinks

Many sites imply ZIP shrinks everything. The result line shows the real before and after sizes, and this page points photos, videos and PDFs to the right dedicated compressors instead of pretending.

2

Three compression levels

Choose Maximum for the smallest archive, Normal for extra speed with very large text files, or Store only to bundle already-compressed photos and videos quickly without wasting time on compression they do not need.

3

Name your archive

Type the archive name before you download, such as invoices-march or project-handover, so the recipient knows what is inside without opening it, and your own downloads folder stays tidy too.

Why use ZIP File Compressor?

Sending twenty attachments one by one is tedious, and many forms accept only one file. A zip file compressor bundles everything into a single upload, and for text-heavy files it cuts the size dramatically. It works as a general file compressor when you need to zip files online without installing an archiver on a work or school computer.

Use it to create ZIP file bundles of logs for a support ticket, a dataset for a colleague, or coursework for a submission portal. To compress a folder, open it, select all the files inside and drop them in together.

Who can use ZIP File Compressor?

Developers

Bundle log files, configuration and source snippets into one small archive to attach to a bug report or support ticket.

Data analysts

Compress files to ZIP when CSV and JSON exports are too large, cutting them by 70–90% so they fit email limits and reach colleagues quickly.

Students

Package coursework files, code and written reports into one ZIP for submission portals that accept only a single upload per assignment.

Office workers

Send a set of invoices, letters and spreadsheets as one tidy attachment, on a work computer where you cannot install software.

Researchers

Archive experiment outputs, text data and lab notes into a single compressed file for sharing with collaborators or for long-term storage.

ZIP File Compressor: frequently asked questions

How do I compress files to ZIP online?
Drop the files here, choose Maximum compression, type a name and click Create ZIP. The archive downloads straight away and opens with the built-in tools on any computer or phone.
Why did my photos and PDFs barely shrink?
JPG, PNG, MP4 and most PDFs are already compressed, so ZIP has little left to remove. Use the image, video or PDF compressors first, then ZIP the smaller files together.
How do I compress folder contents into one ZIP?
Select all the files inside the folder (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A) and drop them here. They are added to the archive as a flat list of files, without subfolders.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit. The archive is built in your device's memory, so several gigabytes can be slow or fail on phones and older computers. Desktop browsers handle large archives best.
Can I password-protect the ZIP?
Not at the moment. Browser-based ZIP encryption uses a weak older method. For a secure archive, use 7-Zip or your operating system's tools with AES encryption.
Which compression level should I choose?
Maximum gives the smallest archive and suits most jobs. Normal is a little faster for very large text files. Store only is best for photos and videos, where compression would not help.
Why did my photos barely shrink?
JPG, PNG, MP4 and PDF are already compressed formats. Use Image Compressor, Compress Video or Compress PDF to make them smaller, then ZIP them.
Is there a size limit?
No fixed limit; the archive is built in your device memory. Several GB may be slow on phones.
Can I add a password?
Not yet. Browser ZIP encryption is weak (ZipCrypto). Use 7-Zip or your OS for AES-encrypted archives.
