Which image editing tool do I need?

What are image editing tools?

Image tools are quick editors for the changes most people need, without the learning curve of full photo software. They fall into a few groups: sizing (resize, crop, social and passport presets, DPI), layout (collage, merge, split, circle crop), effects (blur, sharpen, black and white, pixelate) and utilities such as the colour picker, metadata viewer and AI background remover.

They solve small but frequent problems. A profile picture has to be square, a passport photo must be 35×45 mm, a screenshot shows someone's face, a sideways phone photo needs turning, or an image is too small to print. Each fix takes seconds here, with no wait for a file to be sent anywhere.

How image editing tools work

A digital image is a grid of pixels, each holding colour values. Editing changes that grid. Cropping keeps a rectangle of it, a 90-degree rotation rearranges it, and filters such as blur or sharpen recalculate each pixel from its neighbours. Sharpening, for example, raises contrast along edges using a technique called an unsharp mask.

Resizing is called resampling. Shrinking an image merges several pixels into one, and doing it in steps keeps text and fine lines crisp. Enlarging has to invent pixels: classic methods such as Lanczos interpolate between existing ones, while AI super-resolution models predict plausible edges and texture, which looks sharper. DPI, by contrast, is only a label telling a printer how many pixels to fit into each inch.

These photo editing tools do their work on a canvas in your browser. The two AI tools, the background remover and the upscaler, download a model once and then run it on your device, so even those edits happen without your photo leaving the device.

Key features of our image editing tools

Free daily runs, no watermark

Every editor is free to use each day, with more runs for free account holders and no logo stamped on the result. That includes the AI background remover and upscaler, which many sites charge for per image. Batch tools such as rotate, resize and watermark handle many files in one go.

Exact pixels and print sizes

Type a width and height and get exactly that, or choose a preset such as 1280×720 for YouTube or 1080×1350 for an Instagram portrait. Passport photos follow each document's size and KB rules, and black and white uses luminance weighting rather than a flat average.

Instant for most edits

Crops, rotations, resizes and filters finish in a second or two because nothing is sent to a server. The AI tools are the exception: the first run downloads a model, then background removal takes about 5–20 seconds per image and upscaling takes a few seconds, depending on your device.

Edit on any screen

Each editor works in recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox releases, on desktops running Windows, macOS or Linux and on iPhone, iPad and Android. Pick a photo from your phone's camera roll or drag one in on a laptop, and the layout adapts to the screen you are using.

Keyboard and screen reader support

Buttons, sliders and fields are labelled, menus respond to arrow keys, and processing progress is announced through a live region. You can use browser zoom without breaking the layout, switch on dark mode, and take as long as you like, since nothing times out.

Private by design

Your photos are edited inside the browser and never sent to a server, including faces you blur and documents you crop. Remove EXIF strips GPS and camera data, and the metadata viewer shows what a photo reveals before you share it.

What makes EZ Compress's image editing tools different

1

AI that runs on your device

The background remover and upscaler use models that download to your browser once and then run locally. There are no per-image fees, a whole batch counts as a single run, and no server keeps a copy of your photo.

2

One tool per job

Instead of hunting through menus, each editor opens straight to the settings it needs, with a live preview where that helps. Quick tasks such as flipping, inverting or circle cropping take only a few clicks.

3

Real-world presets built in

Passport and visa sizes for several countries, social media dimensions, YouTube thumbnails, profile pictures for LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Discord, and print sizes for DPI changes are built in, so you never have to look up the numbers.

4

One image, every social size

The social media resizer turns a single picture into correctly cropped versions for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, YouTube and Pinterest, then downloads them together as a ZIP, ready to upload to each platform.

Why use EZ Compress for image editing tasks?

Most edits do not need a heavy desktop program. When you only need to straighten a photo, shrink it for an email or add a caption, an online image editor opens instantly and finishes the job before a large app would have loaded. Because each tool does one thing, there are fewer settings to get wrong.

It also helps with tasks that come with real requirements. A photo resizer with exact pixel presets avoids rejected uploads, a face blur protects people in pictures you post, and removing EXIF stops a photo revealing where you live. You can edit photos online free here, with nothing installed and nothing sent to a server, on whatever device you have to hand.

Who uses our image editing tools?

Social media managers

Resize one image for every platform at once, add text overlays and watermarks, and split a wide graphic into tiles for an Instagram grid.

Online sellers

Remove product photo backgrounds, crop to square listing images, sharpen slightly soft shots and add a logo watermark to a whole batch.

Job and visa applicants

Make a passport or visa photo at the exact size, set an image to 300 DPI for a portal, and turn a signature photo into a transparent PNG.

Teachers and presenters

Put before and after pictures side by side, enlarge a small diagram with the upscaler, and blur pupils' faces in classroom photos before sharing them.

Privacy-minded parents

Check what a photo reveals with the metadata viewer, strip GPS location before posting, and blur faces or number plates in pictures of children.

YouTubers and streamers

Crop and resize thumbnails to 1280×720, make a circular profile picture, and pick exact brand colours from an image with the colour picker.

Image Editing tools: frequently asked questions

Can an online image editor replace full photo software?
For everyday edits, yes. Resizing, cropping, rotating, text, watermarks, blurs and background removal cover most needs. Layer-based compositing, detailed retouching and RAW processing still call for desktop software, and this site does not open TIFF or RAW files.
Will editing reduce my photo's quality?
Cropping, flipping and quarter turns keep every remaining pixel, but saving as JPG applies compression again. Choose PNG output or a high quality setting if you plan to edit the same image several times in a row.
What size should a photo be for social media?
It depends on the platform and placement. An Instagram portrait post is 1080×1350, a story is 1080×1920 and a YouTube thumbnail is 1280×720. The social media resizer and the resize presets hold these sizes, so you do not have to remember them.
How does the AI background remover work without sending my photo anywhere?
The first time you use it, your browser downloads a segmentation model of 40 to 170 MB, depending on the quality you choose. The model then runs on your device, so each photo is processed locally and never sent anywhere.
What is the difference between resizing and changing DPI?
Resizing changes the number of pixels in the image. Changing DPI only edits a label that tells printers how densely to place those pixels, so the file looks identical on screen. To print at a set size, you need both the right DPI and enough pixels.
Can I edit several photos at once?
Yes, many of the tools accept batches, including resize, rotate, flip, blur, black and white, watermark and Remove EXIF. Add all your images, choose the setting once and download the results together as a ZIP.
Is it safe to edit personal photos here?
Yes. Images are processed in your browser and never sent to a server, so family photos, ID documents and screenshots stay on your device. You can also strip GPS and camera data from photos before sharing them anywhere else.
Do edited images carry a watermark?
No. Downloads are clean files with no logo or text added by the site. The only watermark you will see is one you add yourself with the Add Watermark tool.
