Bank statements, payslips and tax documents often arrive locked with a password, which gets in the way every time you open, print or merge them. Enter the password you were given and download an unlocked copy. This tool does not crack or guess passwords: you need the correct one. Everything runs in your browser, so the document and its password never leave your device.
What is Unlock PDF?
Our unlock pdf tool removes the password and permission restrictions from a PDF you are entitled to open. Type the password you were given, and you get a copy that opens without it and allows printing, copying and editing.
Banks, payroll systems and tax offices often protect the PDFs they send, usually with your date of birth or part of an account number. That is sensible in transit but tiresome once the file is safely in your own records, because every time you open, merge or print it you are asked again. This is not a password cracker: it works only with the correct password, or on files that restrict editing but need no password to open.
How to use the Unlock PDF
- Drop the locked PDF.
- Type its password (skip this for PDFs that only block printing or editing).
- Download the unlocked PDF.
How Unlock PDF works
PDFs have two kinds of password. A user password, also called an open password, encrypts the contents so the file cannot be read without it. An owner password, also called a permissions password, sets restrictions such as no printing or no copying while still letting anyone open the document. Many PDFs use only the second kind.
When you supply the user password, the tool decrypts every object in the file and writes a new PDF with no encryption at all. When a file only carries restrictions, no password is needed, because the contents can already be read, so the restrictions are simply dropped.
The work is done by qpdf, a long-established open-source PDF library, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs inside your browser. Pages are decrypted rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable and quality is unchanged. The engine downloads once on first use, and the password you type never leaves the page.
Key features of Unlock PDF
Free, no watermark
Remove a PDF password for free, with no watermark added to the pages. The new file keeps your original name with a short suffix, so it is easy to tell apart from the protected one.
Pages decrypted, not redrawn
The file is decrypted object by object, so fonts, images, bookmarks and form fields stay exactly as they were. Text remains selectable and searchable, and the page count and image quality match the original.
Done in a second or two
After the PDF engine has loaded on first use, most statements and payslips are decrypted in about a second. Large reports take a little longer, but there is no file transfer and no waiting in a server queue.
Works on phone and computer
Use it in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android. It is handy when a bank emails a protected statement to your phone and you want a copy that opens without typing the password.
Labelled password field
The password box is a properly labelled field that works with the keyboard, Enter starts the job, and progress and error messages are announced to screen readers. Dark mode and browser zoom are supported, and there is no time limit.
Password stays in your browser
Both the PDF and the password you type are processed in your browser and never sent to a server. That is exactly what you want for bank statements, tax returns and identity documents.
What makes EZ Compress's Unlock PDF different
Honest about what it does
Some sites promise to crack any PDF. This tool does not guess or recover passwords. It removes protection only with the correct password, or from files that block printing and editing but open freely, which keeps it a tool for your own documents.
Real decryption, selectable text
Instead of printing each page to an image, the file is decrypted with qpdf, so text, links and vector graphics survive unchanged and the file size stays close to the original.
Clear messages
If the password is wrong, or the file needs one and you left the box empty, you are told which. If the PDF was never protected, you get your original file back with a note saying so.
Your documents never travel
Most online password removers need you to send both the file and its password to a server. Here neither leaves your device, which matters for statements, tax returns and medical letters.
Why use Unlock PDF?
Run the unlock pdf step once and the document behaves like any other PDF. You can open it without typing a date of birth each time, merge it with other statements, print it, or attach it to a mortgage or visa application that rejects protected files. A pdf password remover is also needed before tools such as Merge PDF, Organize PDF and PDF to Excel can read the file.
Use it to remove pdf password restrictions that stop you printing or copying from documents you are allowed to use, such as your own payslip or a contract you signed. Keep the protected original somewhere safe, and store the unlocked PDF privately, since anyone who has it can now open it.
Who can use Unlock PDF?
Bank customers
Remove the open password from monthly statements so they can be filed, merged into a yearly record or sent to an accountant without sharing the password separately.
Employees
Make payslips and tax forms that arrive protected open normally, ready for a rental or loan application that will not accept encrypted PDFs.
Accountants
Clients often forward protected statements along with the password. Decrypt them on your own machine, with the password never passed to anyone else, before importing the figures.
Office administrators
Clear printing and copying restrictions from internal forms and policies your organisation created, so staff can print and annotate them.
Visa and mortgage applicants
Application portals frequently reject password-protected files. Remove the protection from your own documents first so the submission goes through at the first attempt.
