Word documents balloon when you paste in photos and screenshots: a 10-page report can easily reach 30 MB. This tool opens the .docx in your browser, recompresses every picture inside it at a sensible resolution, and re-packs the file with maximum ZIP compression. Text, styles, tables and comments are untouched; you get the same document, a fraction of the size.

What is Compress Word?

This tool lets you compress Word document files (.docx) by shrinking the pictures inside them, often cutting the size by 40–80%. Reports, manuals and coursework balloon when you paste in photos and screenshots: a 10-page report can easily reach 30 MB, too big for email or many upload forms.

Drop the DOCX and you get back the same document, a fraction of the size. Text, styles, tables, headers and comments are left exactly as they were, and the file still opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice. Only the image data is re-encoded.

How to compress Word

  1. Drop one or more DOCX files.
  2. Pick Balanced, or Strong for the smallest file.
  3. Download the smaller DOCX. It opens in Word, Google and LibreOffice as before.

How Compress Word works

A .docx file is actually a ZIP archive. Inside are XML files that describe the text, styles and layout, and a media folder holding every picture as a separate file. When you paste a 12-megapixel phone photo into Word and shrink it on the page, Word usually keeps the full-size original in that folder. Cropping hides part of a picture but often keeps the hidden part too.

This tool opens the archive in your browser, finds each JPEG and PNG in the media folder and resizes any that are larger than needed: up to 2400 px on Light, 1600 px on Balanced and 1100 px on Strong. Photos are re-encoded as JPEG, and PNG graphics are reduced to a 256-colour palette so transparency survives.

Finally the archive is re-packed with maximum DEFLATE compression, which also squeezes the XML text. The layout XML itself is never edited.

Key features of Compress Word

Free DOCX shrinking

Compress a batch of Word documents in one run, at no cost and with nothing added to your pages. Several files can be processed in one batch and downloaded separately or together in a ZIP.

Layout kept intact

Only the image files inside the DOCX change. Text, styles, tables, tracked changes, comments and page layout are left as they are, so nothing reflows and your formatting is exactly as you left it.

Big files in seconds

A 30 MB report with dozens of photos typically compresses in a few seconds because the work happens on your own device. A large file never has to travel to a server, and there is no wait for one to send it back.

Opens everywhere afterwards

Use the tool on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or iOS in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. The compressed DOCX opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages just like the original.

Simple, accessible choices

There is one setting, Light, Balanced or Strong, chosen with the keyboard or mouse. Buttons are labelled, progress is announced to screen readers, and the page supports zoom and dark mode.

Drafts stay confidential

Contracts, theses and internal reports are unpacked and re-packed inside your browser. The document is never sent to our servers, so unpublished work, personal details and confidential content stay on your own computer.

What makes EZ Compress's Compress Word different

1

Stays a Word file

Many tools only shrink a document by converting it to PDF. This one returns an editable DOCX, so you and your colleagues can keep working on it after it has been made smaller.

2

Fixes oversized pasted photos

It targets the real cause of bloated documents: full-resolution photos that Word keeps even when they appear small or cropped. Text-heavy documents barely change, while image-heavy ones shrink a lot.

3

Transparent graphics preserved

PNG logos and diagrams are palette-reduced rather than turned into JPEGs, so transparent backgrounds stay transparent in your layout and nothing suddenly gains an unexpected white box behind it on the page.

Why use Compress Word?

Email limits, learning platforms and shared drives all struggle with heavy documents. A docx compressor fixes the cause in one step, so you do not have to reinsert every picture by hand. If you have been looking for a way to compress DOCX coursework or reduce Word file size before sending a report, this is it.

It is especially useful for documents built from screenshots, such as user guides, inspection reports and lab write-ups. Compress the Word file once before sharing and every copy that circulates afterwards is smaller too.

Who can use Compress Word?

Students

Shrink coursework, lab reports and theses full of photos and screenshots so they upload to the learning platform before the submission deadline.

Technical writers

Compress Word document manuals and how-to guides packed with screenshots, keeping them fully editable for whoever writes the next product version.

Property inspectors

Reduce inspection and survey reports with dozens of site photos so they can be emailed to clients the same day.

Office administrators

Compress Word file templates, policy documents and newsletters with logos and images so they are small enough for shared drives and email lists.

Compress Word: frequently asked questions

How do I compress Word document files?
Drop the .docx file here, choose Balanced (or Strong for the smallest file) and download the result. The compressed document opens in Word exactly as before, with smaller pictures inside.
Why is my Word file so large?
Almost always because of pictures. Word keeps pasted photos at full resolution, even when you shrink or crop them on the page. A few phone photos can add tens of megabytes to a short document.
Will compressing change my formatting?
No. Only the image files inside the document are re-encoded. Text, styles, tables, comments and layout are kept as they were, so nothing moves on the page.
Can I compress an old .doc file?
No, only the modern .docx format used since Office 2007. Open the old file in Word or LibreOffice, choose Save As, pick DOCX, and then compress the new file.
How much smaller will my DOCX get?
Documents with photos or screenshots typically shrink by 40–80%. Text-only documents are already small and change very little. If no saving is possible, your original file is returned unchanged.
Can I still edit the compressed document?
Yes. It is still a normal DOCX. You can edit text, move pictures and track changes as usual. Only the stored resolution of the pictures has been reduced.
How much smaller will it get?
Files with photos or screenshots typically shrink 40–80%. Files that are mostly text are already small and change little.
Does it change my Word content?
No. Only image data is re-encoded. Text, formatting, formulas, slides and metadata structure are kept byte-for-byte.
Is the file sent to a server?
No. The file is unpacked, processed and re-packed in your browser.
Does it work with old .doc files?
No, only the modern DOCX format (Office 2007 and later). Open the old file and "Save As" DOCX first.
