Make your website faster: convert PNG to WEBP and cut file size by 25–80% with transparency intact. Batch-convert a whole assets folder and download a ZIP.

What is PNG to WEBP?

Our png to webp converter makes PNG images dramatically smaller for websites while keeping transparency. WEBP is supported by every current browser and typically cuts file size by 25–80% compared with PNG, which means faster page loads, better Core Web Vitals and less storage on your server or CDN.

You can choose lossless WEBP, which keeps every pixel exactly, or lossy WEBP with a quality slider for the biggest savings. Convert one graphic or a whole assets folder in your browser, then download a ZIP. Nothing leaves your device. The PNG originals stay untouched.

How to convert PNG to WEBP

  1. Drop PNG files.
  2. Set quality (80–85% is ideal for the web) or choose lossless.
  3. Download the WEBP files or a ZIP.

How PNG to WEBP works

PNG compresses each row of pixels with a simple filter followed by DEFLATE. Lossless WEBP goes further: it applies colour transforms that remove correlation between red, green and blue, predicts pixels from their neighbours, keeps a cache of recently used colours and matches repeated patterns across the image. Google's measurements put lossless WEBP about a quarter smaller than PNG on average.

Lossy WEBP uses VP8 block prediction for the colour data, while the alpha channel is compressed separately and losslessly. That combination is why a transparent product cut-out can shrink from a 1 MB PNG to around 100 KB with clean edges.

Your browser's built-in encoder does the work here. The PNG is drawn to a canvas with its alpha intact, then encoded as WEBP at your chosen quality, or at maximum quality when Lossless is switched on. All of it happens locally in your tab.

Key features of PNG to WEBP

Free for whole asset folders

Convert every PNG in a project for free in a single batch, with no watermark and no limit on file count. Download the WEBP versions together as a ZIP and drop them straight into your build.

Lossless or lossy, your call

Switch on Lossless to keep every pixel, or use the quality slider (40–100%, with 80–85% ideal for the web) for the largest savings. Transparency and dimensions are preserved either way.

Converts locally in seconds

Encoding uses your browser's native WEBP encoder, entirely on your device with no queue. Typical web graphics convert in under a second each, so a folder of icons finishes almost immediately.

Works on any platform

Run it in current Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, or Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad. Nothing to install and no command-line tools required. A browser tab is all you need.

Accessible controls

The Lossless switch, quality slider and download buttons are keyboard operable and labelled for screen readers, and progress is announced as files finish. Dark mode, zoom and small screens all work.

Unreleased assets stay private

Site graphics for unlaunched products and client projects are converted inside your browser, so they never sit on a third-party server. The network tab shows no image data leaving. Nothing is kept afterwards.

What makes EZ Compress's PNG to WEBP different

1

Real lossless option

Many online converters only offer lossy WEBP. Here a single switch gives you lossless output for logos, UI graphics and pixel art where exact colours matter more than the last few kilobytes.

2

Alpha kept in lossy mode

Transparency survives even at lower quality settings, because WEBP stores the alpha channel separately. Cut-out product images stay cut out at a fraction of the PNG size. Edges stay clean.

3

No build tooling needed

Converting a folder of PNGs normally means installing command-line encoders or image plugins. This runs in a browser tab and hands back a ZIP ready to commit or upload. It takes a minute.

Why use PNG to WEBP?

Convert PNG to WEBP to make your website faster. Large PNG hero images, product cut-outs and illustrations are a common cause of slow Largest Contentful Paint scores, and page speed audits regularly suggest serving images in next-gen formats. Swapping to WEBP often fixes that recommendation in one pass.

It also saves bandwidth and storage on WordPress, Shopify and other platforms that accept WEBP uploads. Use this WEBP converter for transparent graphics where JPG is not an option, and keep your PNG originals as editable masters.

Who can use PNG to WEBP?

Web developers

Batch convert a project's PNG assets to WEBP, compare sizes, and ship lighter pages without adding an image pipeline to your build.

WordPress site owners

Shrink transparent logos and illustrations before uploading them, saving server space and improving page speed scores. No optimisation plugin is required for the job.

Shopify and e-commerce stores

Convert cut-out product PNGs to WEBP so collection pages load faster, especially for shoppers browsing on mobile data. Transparency stays intact.

Game and app developers

Reduce the size of sprites and UI images for web builds and progressive web apps, using lossless mode where colours must stay exact.

SEO consultants

Act on next-gen image recommendations quickly by converting a client's heaviest PNGs and measuring the before and after sizes. Then report the savings.

PNG to WEBP: frequently asked questions

How much smaller is WEBP than PNG?
Lossless WEBP is typically 20–30% smaller than PNG. Lossy WEBP at 80% quality is often 70–80% smaller for photographic or detailed images, and transparency is kept in both cases.
Lossless or lossy WEBP: which should I pick?
Lossless for logos, icons, pixel art and screenshots with text, where exact colours matter. Lossy at 80–85% for photos, illustrations and product images, where the saving is far larger and differences are invisible.
Does PNG to WEBP keep transparency?
Yes, in both lossless and lossy mode. WEBP stores the alpha channel separately from the colour data, so edges, shadows and cut-outs stay clean. No background colour is added.
Do all browsers support WEBP?
Yes. Every current browser supports it, including Safari since version 14 in 2020. Only very old devices and some email clients need a PNG or JPG fallback.
Can I upload WEBP to WordPress?
Yes. WordPress has accepted WEBP uploads since version 5.8. Most modern themes and page builders display WEBP images just like any other format. Older installs should be updated first.
Should I delete my PNG files after converting?
Keep them as masters. PNG is better for future editing, and some email clients and older apps still do not show WEBP. Use the WEBP versions on your website.
Can I convert PNG to WEBP on a phone?
Yes. It works in Safari on iPhone and iPad and in Chrome on Android. Pick the PNGs from your files, convert and download the WEBP versions or a ZIP.
Lossless or lossy WEBP?
Lossless keeps every pixel and is still smaller than PNG. Lossy at 80% is far smaller and fine for photos and most graphics.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes, in both lossless and lossy modes.
