EZ Compress

Cookie Policy

Last updated 12 October 2026

This Cookie Policy explains what EZ Compress (ezcompress.org) stores in your browser and why. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy.

The short answer

Visitors who are not signed in receive no cookies. If you sign in to a free account, the site sets one strictly necessary cookie that keeps you signed in. We don't use cookies for analytics, advertising or tracking, and you won't see a cookie banner here, because a strictly necessary cookie doesn't need consent.

If we ever add analytics or advertising, we will update this policy and the cookie notice before we do.

What we store in your browser

To make the tools work well, the site saves a small amount of data in your browser. Apart from the sign-in cookie, all of it uses standard web storage, which is not a cookie: it stays on your device, is not sent to our server with each request, and we can't read it.

NameTypePurposeDuration
ezc_uFirst-party cookie (strictly necessary)Keeps you signed in to your free account. Only set when you sign in.30 days
ez: (theme)localStorageRemembers whether you chose the dark or light theme.Until you clear site data
ez: (tool settings)localStorageRemembers your preferred options in each tool, such as quality or output format.Until you clear site data
ez: (recent runs)localStorageA local list of recent tool runs: the tool name, file sizes and time. It never contains file contents.Until you clear site data
ez-handoffIndexedDBBriefly holds a file when you pass it from one tool to another.Cleared after use
Service worker cacheCache StorageStores site files (pages, scripts, styles) so the site loads faster and works offline.Until updated or you clear site data

All of the localStorage keys start with "ez:" so they are easy to recognise in your browser's developer tools.

The sign-in cookie

When you sign in to a free account, we set a first-party cookie called "ezc_u". It is strictly necessary: without it, the site could not tell that you are signed in or give you an account's daily free runs. It lasts 30 days, after which you sign in again.

The cookie is HttpOnly, so scripts on the page cannot read it, and it is signed, so it cannot be altered. It contains only your user id and the time it expires, nothing else. Signing out removes it. Counting runs for visitors who are not signed in does not use a cookie at all; our Privacy Policy explains how that works.

The admin session cookie

There is one first-party cookie on the site, called "ezc_admin". It is a strictly necessary session cookie that is only set when a site administrator signs in to the content management area. It keeps the administrator signed in while they edit content.

Visitors never receive this cookie. If you are using the tools or reading the blog, it is not set in your browser.

Third-party providers

Some tools download open-source libraries, fonts or AI models from public content delivery networks the first time you use them. These include cdnjs.cloudflare.com, cdn.jsdelivr.net, unpkg, Hugging Face and Google Fonts.

These providers are separate companies. When your browser connects to them, they may set or read their own cookies under their own policies. We don't control those cookies and don't receive any information from them. Your browser settings let you block third-party cookies if you prefer.

How to clear stored data

Everything the site keeps in your browser is under your control. You can remove it at any time:

  1. Open your browser's settings.
  2. Find the privacy or site data section (often called "Cookies and site data" or "Manage website data").
  3. Search for ezcompress.org and remove its stored data.

This clears the sign-in cookie, the theme, tool settings, recent runs list, any leftover handoff data and the service worker cache, so you will also be signed out. The site will still work afterwards. It will simply return to its default settings and download its files again on your next visit.

You can also use a private or incognito window, in which case the browser discards this data when you close the window.

Changes to this policy

If what we store changes, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date at the top.
