Bank statements, invoices and reports often arrive as PDFs, but you need the numbers in a spreadsheet. This converter reads the text layer of the PDF in your browser, lines words up into rows and columns, and writes an Excel workbook you can sort, filter and sum. It works best on digital PDFs; scanned pages have no text layer to read.

What is PDF to Excel?

Our pdf to excel converter pulls the tables out of a PDF and writes them into an editable XLSX workbook. Rows and columns are rebuilt from the position of the text on each page, so a bank statement, price list or financial report becomes a sheet you can sort, filter and total.

It saves the slow, error-prone job of retyping figures. Copying a table out of a PDF usually pastes everything into one column or scrambles the order, and fixing that by hand takes longer than the analysis itself. This tool does the alignment for you and turns amounts into real numbers that formulas can use.

How to convert PDF to Excel

  1. Drop a PDF with tables.
  2. Choose one sheet per page or a single combined sheet.
  3. Download the XLSX and open it in Excel or Google Sheets.

How PDF to Excel works

A digital PDF does not contain tables the way a spreadsheet does. It contains instructions to draw small runs of text at exact coordinates, plus some lines and boxes. A table only exists visually, because words happen to line up. To recover it, a converter has to read every text fragment with its position and work out the grid.

This tool reads the text layer with an open-source PDF library in your browser. Fragments that share a baseline are grouped into a row, and fragments sitting close together are joined into one cell. It then looks at how many cells the table-like rows contain and where they start and end, which gives the column boundaries that every row is mapped onto.

Finally, values that look like numbers are converted. Thousands separators are removed, bracketed or trailing-minus amounts become negative, percentages become fractions with a % format, and common currency symbols are kept as number formatting. IDs with leading zeros and numbers longer than 15 digits, such as account numbers, stay as text so nothing is rounded.

Key features of PDF to Excel

Free, with no page cap

Convert statements and reports of any length with no page limit and no watermark. Drop several PDFs together and download each workbook separately, or all of them at once in a ZIP.

Numbers you can sum

Amounts like 1,250.00, (300.00) or 12.5% become real numeric cells with matching number formats, so SUM and pivot tables work straight away. Account numbers and codes with leading zeros are left as text, so no digits are lost.

Pages read in seconds

With no file transfer, a 10-page statement is usually converted in a couple of seconds after the PDF reader has loaded for the first time. Longer reports scale with your device's speed rather than a server queue.

Works on phone and desktop

Runs in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, on Windows, macOS and Linux computers as well as iPhone, iPad and Android. The XLSX opens in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice Calc, so you can check the result wherever you are.

Clear, labelled options

The sheet layout choice and the number switch are labelled controls that work with Tab, Enter and the arrow keys. Progress is announced to screen readers, the page supports dark mode and browser zoom, and nothing times out.

Statements stay on your device

Bank statements and payslips are full of account numbers and personal details. Here the PDF is read in your browser and never sent to a server, so that information stays on your own computer or phone.

What makes EZ Compress's PDF to Excel different

1

Real numbers, not text

Many converters write every value as text, which forces you to clean the column before Excel will add it up. This one parses amounts, percentages and negatives into true numbers, and you can switch that off if you prefer the raw text.

2

One sheet per page or one long sheet

Keep each PDF page on its own tab, named Page 1, Page 2 and so on, or stack every page into a single sheet with a blank row between pages, which suits multi-page transaction lists.

3

Honest about scans

If a PDF has no text layer, the tool says so and points you to OCR instead of handing you a workbook full of empty cells. You never download a blank file without knowing why.

4

Column widths sized for you

Each column is widened to fit its longest value, up to a sensible maximum, so the workbook is readable the moment you open it and you do not have to drag every column border.

Why use PDF to Excel?

Use it when the data you need is trapped in a PDF. Reconciling a bank statement, comparing supplier price lists, checking expense claims or analysing a year of sales reports all go faster once the figures sit in cells. A pdf to xlsx conversion takes seconds and avoids the typing errors that creep in when copying by hand.

It is also the quickest way to extract table from pdf files for further work. Paste the result into an existing model, build a chart or import it into accounting software. Because each pdf table to excel conversion keeps numbers as numbers, totals and formulas work immediately, and you only need a brief tidy-up for merged headings.

PDF to Excel: frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Excel for free?
Drop the PDF here, choose one sheet per page or all pages in one sheet, and press Convert to Excel. The XLSX downloads straight away. There is no page limit and no watermark, and the file is processed in your browser.
Why does my scanned PDF give no results?
A scan is a picture of a page with no text layer to read. Run it through PDF to Word with OCR first, or ask for a digital copy. Statements downloaded from online banking are usually digital and convert well.
Will the columns line up exactly?
On clean tables with consistent columns, yes. Columns are worked out from where text sits on the page, so merged headings, multi-line cells and notes written across a table may land in the wrong column and need a quick tidy-up.
Does it keep bank statement amounts as numbers?
Yes, with Turn numbers into real numbers switched on. Amounts with separators, currency symbols, brackets or a trailing minus become numeric cells. Dates and descriptions stay as text, so set the date column format in Excel if you want to sort by it.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF to Excel?
Not directly. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you were given, then convert the unlocked PDF here.
Can I put all pages into one sheet?
Yes. Choose All pages in one sheet and every page is stacked into a single tab, with a blank row marking where each new page began. That suits long statements where you want one continuous list of transactions.
Can I use PDF to Excel on my phone?
Yes. Open the page on iPhone or Android and pick the PDF from Files or your downloads. The XLSX is saved to your phone, and you can open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers to check it.
Are images, logos or charts converted?
No. Only the text is read, because the goal is data you can work with. Logos, photos and chart graphics in the PDF are ignored, and the numbers behind a chart are only captured if they are printed on the page as text.
Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Not well. A scan is a picture with no text layer. Run it through PDF to Word with OCR first, or use a digital copy of the document.
Will columns line up exactly?
Columns are detected from the position of text on the page. Simple tables come out cleanly; merged cells and multi-line cells may need a quick tidy-up.
