Need a lossless copy of an iPhone photo, or a transparent-capable format for editing? Convert HEIC to PNG here. PNG files are larger than JPG but survive repeated edits without compounding compression artefacts.

What is HEIC to PNG?

Our heic to png converter gives you a lossless copy of a photo from your iPhone, iPad or Mac in a format every editor, design app and office program understands. PNG keeps every decoded pixel exactly, so it is the right choice when the picture is a starting point for more work rather than the finished thing.

Typical cases are photos you want to retouch, crop for a slide deck or drop into a design mock-up, and camera shots of documents or whiteboards where crisp edges matter. Conversion runs on your device, takes whole batches, and nothing is sent to our servers.

How to convert HEIC to PNG

  1. Drop HEIC files from your iPhone or Mac.
  2. Click Convert. Decoding happens on your device.
  3. Download PNGs individually or as a ZIP.

How HEIC to PNG works

A HEIC file is a container, not just one picture. Inside you can find the main image, a thumbnail, sometimes depth or portrait data, and metadata. iPhones store the main photo as a grid of small HEVC-compressed tiles, and the decoder has to read every tile and stitch them back together before you see a single image.

PNG works very differently. It stores pixels losslessly, using a filter on each row to make the values more predictable and then DEFLATE compression, the same family used in ZIP files. What you decode is exactly what you get back on every later open and save, with no new compression artefacts each time you edit.

In this tool the decoder library loads into your browser on first use, the tiles are rebuilt in memory, the picture is rotated upright, and your browser writes the PNG at 8 bits per channel. Because photos are full of fine noise, lossless PNG files of them are large. That is expected, not a fault.

Key features of HEIC to PNG

Free lossless batches

Convert a whole batch of HEIC photos to PNG in one run, with no watermark and no paid tier needed for bigger files. Drop a folder's worth at once and download everything together as a ZIP when the batch finishes.

Every pixel kept exactly

PNG output is lossless, so the decoded photo is stored pixel for pixel at its original dimensions. Repeated edits and saves in your editor will not add the blocky artefacts that build up when you keep re-saving a JPG.

Converts in seconds

Nothing travels to a server and there is no queue, so each photo is decoded and written as soon as you press Convert. The first run waits briefly for the decoder to download. Writing large PNGs takes a little longer than JPG on slower phones.

Phone, tablet or desktop

It works in current Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows, macOS and Linux. Nothing to install, and you can pin it to your home screen or dock as an app from the browser menu.

Usable without a mouse

Tab and Enter operate every control, buttons and fields have clear labels, and screen readers hear progress through a live region. Dark mode, browser zoom and small screens are all supported, and nothing on the page times out.

Originals stay private

Photos are decoded in your browser's memory and never sent to a server. You can check the network tab to see that only page code loads. The PNG is written without the HEIC's GPS and camera metadata.

What makes EZ Compress's HEIC to PNG different

1

Lossless, not just renamed

Some quick converters squeeze photos through a lossy step before saving PNG. Here the decoded HEIC goes straight to a lossless PNG encoder, so what you get is the best copy your browser can produce from the original.

2

Upright from the start

iPhones often store portrait shots sideways and rely on an orientation tag. This converter applies that tag while decoding, so your PNG opens the right way up in apps that ignore orientation data.

3

Big files handled locally

Because nothing is sent to a server, there is no server-side size cap. A 48-megapixel HEIF Max photo from a recent iPhone can be converted as long as your device has the memory, with no waiting for a slow transfer first.

Why use HEIC to PNG?

Choose HEIC to PNG when the photo is going into an editing pipeline. Designers placing iPhone shots into mock-ups, teachers cropping a whiteboard photo for slides and anyone layering text over a picture all benefit from a lossless starting file that will not degrade on each save.

It is also a sensible archive format if you are leaving the Apple ecosystem and want a copy of important photos that any program will open decades from now. If you only need to share or upload, convert HEIC to JPG instead: the files are a fraction of the size.

Who can use HEIC to PNG?

Graphic designers

Bring iPhone reference photos into Figma, Photoshop or Affinity as PNG and keep full quality through every round of edits and exports.

Teachers and lecturers

Convert photos of whiteboards, worksheets and experiments into PNGs that stay sharp when cropped and pasted into slides or handouts.

Bloggers and writers

Edit iPhone screenshots and photos in any image editor without the format being rejected, then export the final version in whatever size the post needs.

Families archiving photos

Keep a lossless, widely readable copy of special photos before moving from iPhone to another platform, so they open in any viewer years from now.

Students

Turn photographed lab results or handwritten notes into PNGs that paste cleanly into Word, Google Docs or a project report.

HEIC to PNG: frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to PNG on a Mac without Preview?
Open this page in Safari or Chrome, drag the HEIC files from Finder onto the drop area and press Convert. You get PNG files without opening Preview's export dialog for each one, and you can download the batch as a ZIP.
Is PNG or JPG better for iPhone photos?
JPG for sharing, email and uploads, because it is small. PNG when you will edit the photo further or want a lossless archive. Both open everywhere, so the choice is really about file size versus editing headroom.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses modern lossy compression, while PNG stores every pixel losslessly. Photos are full of fine detail and noise that lossless compression cannot shrink much, so a 2 MB HEIC can become a 15–30 MB PNG. That is normal.
Does HEIC to PNG keep transparency?
iPhone camera photos have no transparent areas, so the PNG is fully opaque. Once it is a PNG you can remove the background with a separate tool and the format will then hold the transparency properly.
Will I lose HDR or 10-bit colour?
Browsers work at 8 bits per channel, so the PNG is a standard 8-bit image. Colours look right on normal screens, but the extra HDR range some recent iPhone photos carry is not preserved.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only to load the page and, on first use, the HEIC decoder. After that you can go offline and keep converting, because all the work happens on your device.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG in bulk?
Yes. Select or drop as many HEIC files as you need and they are converted one after another. Download each PNG separately or grab them all in one ZIP.
PNG or JPG for iPhone photos?
JPG for sharing and web use (small). PNG if you plan to edit the image further, or need a lossless archive.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG is lossless, so a 12-megapixel photo can be 20–30 MB. That is normal. Use HEIC to JPG for small files.
Does it handle Live Photos?
Yes, the still frame is converted. The short video part is not included.
