Phone videos are recorded at bitrates far higher than any chat app or website needs. This compressor re-encodes the video in your browser at a lower bitrate and, if you like, a lower resolution, giving you files that are 60–90% smaller and still look good on a phone or laptop. Set a target in MB to fit Discord's 10 MB, WhatsApp's 16 MB or an email limit. The video never leaves your device. Note that encoding runs in real time: a 2-minute clip takes about 2 minutes, so keep the tab open.
What is Compress Video?
Our compress video tool makes MP4, MOV, WEBM and MKV files smaller in your browser, so they fit chat apps, email and upload limits. You choose a quality level, or type a target size in MB, and pick a resolution from the original down to 360p.
Phone cameras record at very high bitrates, so a one-minute clip can easily pass 100 MB. That is far more data than a phone screen or a Discord window needs. This video compressor re-encodes the clip at a sensible bitrate, typically making it 60–90% smaller while it still looks good.
How to compress video
- Drop a video (MP4, MOV, WEBM).
- Choose a quality level or type a target size in MB, and a resolution.
- Wait while it plays through once, then download the smaller file.
How Compress Video works
Video size is mostly bitrate multiplied by duration. Bitrate is how many bits are spent on each second of video, and phones spend a lot to capture fine detail and fast motion. Lowering the bitrate, and optionally the resolution, gives the encoder less data per frame, so it keeps the important detail and discards what your eye will barely notice.
This tool uses your browser's built-in MediaRecorder, which drives your device's own video encoder. The video plays silently in the background, each frame is drawn at the new size, and the encoder records it at the bitrate you picked. In Target size mode, the bitrate is worked out from the duration so the file lands just under your limit.
Because the encoder records as the video plays, compression runs in real time: a 2-minute clip takes about 2 minutes, and the tab must stay visible. Output is MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) in Chrome, Edge and Safari, and WEBM in Firefox.
Key features of Compress Video
Free with no size limit
Compress videos with no watermark and no file size cap imposed by a server, because your videos never leave your device. The only limit is your device's memory for very long 4K clips.
Hits a target in MB
Type 10 for Discord, 16 for WhatsApp or 25 for Gmail and the bitrate is calculated from the video's length to land just under that size. If a clip ends up slightly over, the result says so.
Real-time, private encoding
Encoding runs at playback speed using your device's hardware encoder, so a 2-minute video takes about 2 minutes. There is no time spent sending the file to a server and back, which often makes the total faster for big files.
Plays on every device
The MP4 or WEBM output plays on iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS and in every major chat app. The compressor runs in current Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, on desktop and mobile.
Clear, labelled choices
Mode, quality, target size, resolution and audio are labelled controls you can operate by keyboard. Progress through the video is announced to screen readers, and the tool shows the final resolution and bitrate as text.
Videos stay on your device
Family clips, client footage and confidential recordings are re-encoded inside your browser and never sent to our servers. You can confirm in the network tab that the video does not leave your computer or phone.
What makes EZCompressor's Compress Video different
Target size or quality
Many tools offer only vague quality presets. Here you can pick High, Medium or Low, or switch to Target size and type the exact MB limit you need to fit, from 1 MB upwards.
Never bigger than the original
If a video is already efficiently compressed and the new file would not be smaller, the original is kept and the tool tells you, instead of handing back a larger, worse copy.
Resolution and audio options
Drop to 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p to save far more space on high-resolution phone footage, and switch audio off entirely for silent clips such as screen recordings or product demos.
Large files stay put
Sending a 500 MB video to an online compressor can take longer than compressing it. Here the file is processed in place, and nothing about it is stored on a server.
Why use Compress Video?
The most common reason is a size limit. Discord's free tier caps files at 10 MB, WhatsApp at 16 MB for normal video, and Gmail at 25 MB. Choose Target size, type the limit and pick 720p, and the tool aims just under it. It is the quickest way to compress video for Discord or compress video for email without installing editing software.
Smaller files are also easier to keep and share. Compress MP4 recordings before uploading them to a website, a learning platform or cloud storage, and you save space and time. If you simply want to reduce video size for phones, Medium quality at 720p usually looks just as good on a small screen. This mp4 compressor also accepts MOV, WEBM and MKV.
Who can use Compress Video?
Gamers
Shrink gameplay clips to under 10 MB with Target size so they upload straight into Discord chats without a Nitro subscription.
Teachers and lecturers
Compress recorded lessons and demonstrations to 720p before uploading them to a learning platform with a strict file size limit.
Estate agents
Reduce property walk-through videos shot on a phone so they can be emailed to buyers or uploaded to a listing site quickly.
Customer support teams
Ask customers to compress screen recordings of a problem here so the clip fits your helpdesk's attachment limit, without sending it to a third party.
Parents
Make family videos small enough to send on WhatsApp or by email to relatives, without the footage passing through an online service.
Settings explained
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Compress by | Choose between a fixed quality or an exact file-size target. |
| Quality | Higher keeps more detail but makes a larger file. 80–90% is visually identical to the original for most photos. |
| Target size (MB) | Discord free: 10 MB. WhatsApp: 16 MB (or 2 GB as document). Gmail: 25 MB. |
| Resolution | Output resolution (shorter side). Lower resolutions shrink the file a lot and look fine on phones. |
| Keep audio | Keep the soundtrack. Turn off for silent clips to save space. |
