Paste a data URI or raw Base64 string and get the image back as a downloadable file. Handy when debugging APIs, emails or JSON payloads that embed images.

What is Base64 to Image?

Our base64 to image converter decodes a Base64 string or data URI back into a real image you can preview and download. Paste text from an API response, a JSON file, a database field, an email source or a stylesheet and see the picture straight away, along with its type and file size.

It accepts strings with or without the data: prefix, removes line breaks and spaces automatically, and recognises common formats from the decoded bytes. The download is the original image exactly as encoded. Decoding happens in your browser, so the data you paste stays private.

How to convert Base64 to Image

  1. Paste the Base64 text (with or without the data: prefix).
  2. Preview appears instantly.
  3. Download the image.

How Base64 to Image works

Base64 represents binary data as text: every 4 characters stand for 3 bytes. Decoding reverses that, mapping each character back to 6 bits and reassembling the original bytes. Padding equals signs at the end tell the decoder how many bytes the final group holds.

If the text starts with a data URI header such as data:image/jpeg;base64, the tool uses the declared type. Without a header, it inspects the first bytes, known as magic numbers. JPEG files begin with FF D8, GIF with the letters GIF, WEBP has WEBP at byte 8, and SVG starts with a less-than sign. Anything else is treated as PNG.

Whitespace and line breaks, common in email sources and wrapped logs, are stripped before decoding. The bytes are then wrapped as a file in your browser for previewing and downloading, with no conversion or recompression, so the result is exactly what was encoded.

Key features of Base64 to Image

Free decoding, no fees

Decode Base64 strings without a fee. Preview and download each image instantly, with no watermark added. A free account adds more daily runs if your work needs them.

Exact original bytes

The download is byte-for-byte the image that was encoded, in its original format and quality. Nothing is resized or re-encoded, and the preview shows the real type and size. Transparency and quality are exactly as encoded.

Preview as you paste

Decoding runs the moment you paste, with no button press or server round trip. Long strings for large images still decode in a fraction of a second. Edit the string and the preview updates straight away.

Desktop or phone

Paste Base64 in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad. Useful for quick checks of an API response while away from your desk. No install needed.

Accessible text input

The paste area and download button are keyboard operable and labelled, errors are shown as readable messages, and the page supports dark mode, zoom and small screens without time limits.

Sensitive payloads stay local

API responses and logs can contain private images such as ID scans. Decoding happens entirely in your browser and the text is never sent anywhere. You can confirm this in the network tab.

What makes EZ Compress's Base64 to Image different

1

Detects the format itself

Raw Base64 without a header is identified from its first bytes as JPEG, GIF, WEBP or SVG, defaulting to PNG, so you get the right file extension without guessing. The correct extension is used automatically.

2

Forgiving with messy input

Line breaks, indentation and spaces copied from logs, emails or pretty-printed JSON are removed automatically before decoding, so you do not have to clean the string by hand. That saves fiddly manual clean-up.

3

No re-encoding

Many decoders redraw the image and save it as PNG. This one gives you the original file, keeping its exact format, quality and any transparency. The download is byte-for-byte identical.

Why use Base64 to Image?

Convert Base64 to image data when you need to check what an API, webhook or database actually stored. Seeing the picture and its size quickly confirms whether an upload worked, whether a thumbnail was generated correctly or whether the data was truncated.

It is also the quickest way to extract embedded images from HTML, CSS, JSON exports, HAR files and raw email sources. Paste the string into this base64 to image decoder, preview the result and save it as a normal image file.

Who can use Base64 to Image?

API developers

Check Base64 image fields in requests and responses to confirm the right image was sent, at the size you expect.

QA testers

Verify that generated thumbnails, signatures and charts returned as Base64 render correctly before filing or closing a bug. No script needed.

Database administrators

Inspect images stored as Base64 text columns without writing a script to export and decode them. Paste the column value and preview it in seconds.

Email and security analysts

Pull inline images out of raw email sources safely in the browser, without opening the message in a mail client.

Web designers

Recover icons embedded as data URIs in a stylesheet or template and save them as standalone files for reuse. No editor needed.

Base64 to Image: frequently asked questions

How do I convert base64 to image files?
Paste the Base64 string or data URI into the text box. The image previews immediately with its type and size. Click download to save it as a file.
Do I need the data:image prefix?
No. Paste either a full data URI or just the raw Base64 characters. Without a prefix, the format is detected from the first decoded bytes.
Why does it say my Base64 is invalid?
The string is probably incomplete or contains characters outside the Base64 alphabet. Make sure you copied all of it, without surrounding quotes or a trailing comma from JSON.
Does it support URL-safe Base64?
URL-safe Base64 uses minus and underscore instead of plus and slash. Replace each minus with plus and each underscore with slash, then paste the string again and it will decode.
What format will the downloaded image be?
The original format, as declared in the data URI or detected from the bytes: PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP or SVG. The file is not converted or recompressed.
Can I decode Base64 images from an email source?
Yes. Copy the Base64 block of the image attachment from the raw message. Line breaks are removed automatically, so the wrapped lines decode correctly. Nothing else needs cleaning.
Is the pasted data sent to a server?
No. Decoding uses your browser's built-in functions and the image is created locally. You can work offline once the page has loaded. The text exists only in your open tab.
It says invalid Base64?
Make sure you pasted the whole string. Line breaks and spaces are removed automatically, but a truncated string cannot be decoded.
What format is the download?
Whatever the data URI declares. Raw Base64 without a prefix is detected from the first bytes (PNG, JPG, GIF, WEBP).
