Compressor tools

EZCompressor is a free online compressor for the files people most often need to shrink: photos, PNG graphics, PDFs, Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents, plus a ZIP tool for everything else. Pick a quality level or type the exact size a form demands, such as 50 KB or 200 KB, and get a smaller file back in seconds. Nothing is sent to a server, because every job runs inside your browser.

Which compressor tool do I need?

What are compressor tools?

A file compressor makes a file take up fewer bytes while keeping it usable. This hub gathers 22 of them in one place: general image and JPEG compressors, a PNG colour reducer, fixed-target tools from 10 KB up to 500 KB, PDF compressors with KB targets, Office compressors for DOCX, PPTX and XLSX, and a ZIP archiver for mixed files.

The problems they solve are everyday ones. An exam portal rejects a 3 MB photo. An email bounces because the attachment is over the limit. A slide deck is too heavy to share, or a website crawls because its pictures are huge. In each case you need to reduce file size without wrecking the content, and ideally without sending private documents to a stranger's server.

How compressor tools work

Every compressor works in one of two ways. Lossless compression finds repetition and writes it more compactly, so the original can be rebuilt bit for bit. ZIP archives and PNG files both rely on this approach. Lossy compression goes further by discarding detail people are unlikely to notice, which is how JPEG and WEBP photos reach a fraction of their original size.

Choosing the right method matters more than the setting. Text files, CSVs and logs often shrink by 70–90% in a ZIP, while photos, MP4 videos and most PDFs barely change, because they are already compressed inside. For those you have to re-encode the content itself: lower the JPEG quality, cut a PNG down to a 256-colour palette, or resample the pictures embedded in a PDF or Word file. When you compress image and PDF files this way, text and layout stay as they were and only the pictures get lighter.

Exact KB targets work by searching. The tool tries a quality, measures the result and narrows in on the highest setting that still fits, reducing dimensions only if quality alone is not enough. It all runs on your device, so nothing is sent to a server.

Key features of our compressor tools

Free runs every day

Every compressor on this page is free and adds no watermark. You get free runs every day, more once you create a free account, and a batch of files counts as one run. Batch tools accept many files at once and hand them back as one ZIP.

Lands just under your limit

Target-size modes search for the best quality that still fits, so a 50 KB requirement gives you a file just under 50 KB, not a needlessly blurry 31 KB one. PDF compression keeps text as text, and the Office compressors leave content and formatting untouched.

Results in a second or two

There is no server queue or round trip, so most photos and PDFs finish in a second or two. Big scanned PDFs, heavy Office files and long batches take longer, and older phones are slower, because the work runs on your own processor.

Any modern browser

The compressors work in up-to-date versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox, on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPhone, iPad or Android. Pick files from a camera roll, drag them onto the page or paste an image with Ctrl or Cmd+V. You can also install the site as an app from the browser menu.

Keyboard and screen reader ready

Every button and field has a label, controls work with Tab and Enter, and a live region reads progress aloud to screen reader users. Nothing is timed, the layout holds up at high browser zoom, and a dark mode toggle is available.

Files never leave your device

Compression runs inside your browser tab, so photos, ID scans, contracts and spreadsheets never leave your device. Open the developer tools and watch the network tab to confirm it. After the page loads, the tools carry on working if your connection drops.

What makes EZCompressor's compressor tools different

1

Exact size targets for forms

Instead of guessing with a slider, you can type the limit an upload form states, from tiny signature files to 5 MB print images, and get a file that fits. Ready-made pages for 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 200 and 500 KB save even that step.

2

Office files, not just photos

Few online tools compress DOCX, PPTX and XLSX files. These ones open the document package, recompress the pictures inside and re-pack it with maximum ZIP compression, so you get the same document back, only lighter.

3

Never larger than the original

If re-encoding would make a file bigger, which can happen with images that are already well optimised, the image compressors keep your original instead of handing you a worse result. You always see the before and after sizes.

4

Honest about what will shrink

The ZIP tool explains that photos, videos and PDFs barely shrink inside an archive and points you to the right compressor instead. That spares you the frustration of zipping a 40 MB video and getting a 39 MB file back.

Why use EZCompressor for compressor tasks?

Size limits are everywhere. Job portals, visa applications, university admissions and exam registrations often cap a photo at 20–100 KB and a PDF at a few hundred KB, with no advice on how to get there. An online compressor that accepts the exact number turns a frustrating rejection into a two-minute job, and you keep the best quality the limit allows.

Smaller files also make daily work easier. Lighter images help web pages load faster, a compressed slide deck fits in an email, and a shared drive stops filling up with 30 MB reports. Because your files are never sent to a server, you can compress files online that you would never hand to an unknown server: payslips, medical letters, passport scans and client contracts.

Who uses our compressor tools?

Job applicants

Shrink a CV PDF under a portal's 200 KB cap, or bring a photo and signature down to the sizes recruitment forms list, without losing legibility.

Students

Fit exam registration photos, scanned certificates and coursework PDFs under strict upload limits, straight from a phone, with no app to install.

Office teams

Make bloated Word reports, PowerPoint decks and Excel workbooks small enough to email, while the text, styles and layout stay exactly as they were.

Web developers and bloggers

Cut PNG screenshots and JPEG photos to a fraction of their size before publishing, so pages load faster and hosting storage lasts longer.

Online sellers

Batch-compress product photos to meet marketplace file limits and speed up listing pages, then download the whole set as one ZIP.

Anyone with private paperwork

Compress bank statements, ID scans and medical documents without sending them to anyone, which keeps those sensitive papers off third-party servers entirely.

Compressor tools: frequently asked questions

What is the best way to reduce file size without losing quality?
Match the method to the file. PNG graphics and Office documents can often shrink a lot with no visible change, while photos need gentle lossy compression at around 75–85% quality. Lossless options such as ZIP or PNG re-packing keep every bit but save much less on photos.
Can I compress image and PDF files together in one go?
Not in a single tool, because images and PDFs are compressed in different ways. Use the image compressor for your photos and the PDF compressor for documents. Both accept several files at once, so two quick batches cover a mixed set.
Why did my file barely get smaller?
It was probably compressed already. JPEG photos saved at low quality, MP4 videos and many PDFs have little left to remove. Try a stronger level, a smaller maximum dimension or a target size, and remember that zipping alone saves little on these formats.
Is an online compressor safe for confidential files?
It depends where the work happens. On this site every compressor runs inside your browser, so the file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. You can check this yourself in the browser's network tab while a file compresses.
Is there a maximum file size?
The site sets no fixed limit. The practical ceiling is your device's memory, so very large PDFs or huge batches may be slow or fail on an older phone. A laptop or desktop copes with much bigger jobs.
Does compressing a PDF make the text blurry?
No. The PDF compressor re-encodes only the images inside and leaves text, fonts and links alone, so text stays sharp and selectable. The exception is target-size mode: if recompressing images cannot reach your number, the tool may flatten pages to images as a final step, and it tells you when that happens.
What is the difference between compressing and resizing?
Compressing keeps the same width and height and stores the pixels more efficiently. Resizing changes the number of pixels. For strict KB limits the target tools combine the two: they lower quality first and reduce dimensions only if quality alone cannot reach the size.
Where are the video and audio compressors?
They have their own hub under Video & Audio, because they work differently: video is re-encoded in real time and audio is converted to a lower-bitrate MP3. Both run in your browser, just like the tools on this page.
