About EZCompressor

EZCompressor is a free collection of around 100 file tools that run in your browser. You can shrink a PDF, convert a document, resize a photo or remove a background without installing anything, and your files never leave your device.

Why we built it

Most free file tools come with a catch. Some add a watermark to your result. Some stop you after two files or a few megabytes. Many upload your documents to a server you know nothing about, then ask you to trust that they get deleted.

We wanted tools that are honest about what they do, keep your files private and don't hold back the useful parts. So we built them.

Our principles

Your files stay on your device

Every file tool processes your file inside your browser. Nothing is sent to our server, so we never see your files and can't keep them. The few tools that need an outside service say so clearly, and our Privacy Policy lists each one.

The tool comes first

When you open a tool, the tool is what you see. Nothing covers the download button, and you don't have to click through pop-ups to get your file.

A generous free allowance, no watermarks

Every tool is free, with free runs every day and more when you create a free account. A whole batch of files counts as one run, and there are no watermarks and no tiny file size limits set to push you somewhere else. The size of each file is limited only by what your device's memory can handle.

Honest about results

Compression is often lossy, and some conversions are approximate. We tell you when that is the case and suggest keeping your original when quality matters.

How it works

When you open a tool, your browser downloads the code it needs and does the work itself, using WebAssembly and the image and media codecs built into modern browsers. Because of this, tools keep working even if your connection drops after the page has loaded. Our server only keeps count of your daily free runs and runs the optional free accounts; it never receives your files.

We stand on the shoulders of excellent open-source projects, including:

  • pdf-lib and jsPDF for creating and editing PDFs
  • PDF.js for reading and rendering PDF pages
  • qpdf (compiled to WebAssembly) for optimising and unlocking PDFs
  • Mammoth for reading Word documents
  • SheetJS for spreadsheets
  • Tesseract.js for text recognition (OCR)
  • heic2any for iPhone HEIC photos
  • gif.js for creating animated GIFs
  • lamejs for MP3 encoding
  • JSZip for ZIP archives
  • ag-psd for Photoshop files
  • an IMG.LY background removal model that runs on your device

Some of these libraries and models are downloaded from public CDNs the first time you use a tool, then cached by your browser.

What's in the box

  • Compressors: make images, PDFs, audio and video files smaller, with control over the quality trade-off.
  • PDF tools: merge, split, organise, edit and unlock PDFs, or turn PDF pages into images.
  • Converters: move between formats such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, JPG, PNG, SVG and GIF.
  • Image editing: resize, crop, rotate, blur, add text or watermarks, remove backgrounds and make passport photos.

Tools can pass files to each other too, so you can convert a file and then compress it without downloading it in between.
